Confessions
I really should CC Cajun Boy and Mallory on this one, but here’s a confession: I really like Lana Del Rey. I haven’t listened to the whole album, but I’ve got a pretty hefty Youtube queue of her music videos and live performances that I really dig. And my really delightful New Year’s Eve began with about an hour-and-a-half of Lana Del Rey music with coffee and whiskey after...

Dear Interview Subjects,
Answer the questions that are asked of you, and answer them succinctly. When a 10 minute interview becomes you rambling for 55 minutes about unrelated things, despite the interviewer’s attempts to reign in the conversation, you’re giving a bad interview. It’s a pain in the ass to transcribe and a pain in the ass to publish. And also: fuck you.

saints11: This is another in our continuing series of essays answering the question “What do the New Orleans Saints mean to you?” In it, Alexander J. Hancock of NOLA Eater explains Saints fandom—and New Orleans itself—as an essential part of our cultural identify. So, I’ll be completely honest. I have no real reason to love the Saints, especially not with the obsessive intensity I feel for...

Why I'm An Irrational Human Being
This. This totally reasonable assessment of Saturday’s game—from a guy who’s a huge Saints fan but who nevertheless can somehow put that down and actually be thoughtful about that shit—just got me feeling so worked up I snuck outside for a late night stress cigarette.

Sadness
Man. I’m sad the football season (or at least the part of football season I care about) is over. Saints season is the best season, even better than King Cake Season (i.e. Mardi Gras) and Satsuma Season (i.e. Christmas). Ok, maybe that’s a little bit of a stretch. But only a little bit. Go Ravens, I guess? (As an aside, could anything be worse than a Packers-Patriots Super Bowl? God...

wh0datnati0n: Personal rant about fans vs. “fans” Read More The issue of authenticity in fandom (sports or otherwise) is a thorny one. Usually we only see the one side of it, from the people who grew up in such-and-such a team’s town, whose parents and grandparents were die-hard fans and for whom rooting for that team is (so they say) “in their blood.” All of which is great,...

Revisionist History
I was literally days away from moving to Oakland, in a version of my history that I’ll probably tell in 5-10 years. In reality, I was about 3 months from applying to a grad program that, if it accepted me, would require moving to the Bay Area and I wanted Oakland over San Francisco over Berkley. But whatever, that version of history is boring. It was so much more urgent than that. Or so I...

Perspective
Being in the same room as an immensely successful, wealthy and fit 22 year old (Mark Ingram—fit minus the whole turf toe thing) really puts shit in perspective. As in, “Man, I need to get my shit in gear and make something of myself” kind of perspective.

saints11: henryjamesguidetosports: …Thus does Mr. Brees’ pass land where it was intended to land, as we all too often wish our own actions achieve what we saw in our proposals of them. … Sainthood is not, indeed never has been, easily granted; but granted still it must be to the rightly aimed and rightly caught pass, and once more that rare wheel of fortune will turn to the ...
